This painting is an exercise in creating a textured background first, then placing subject matter around the textures in a pleasing composition. The birds are a study of red robin pictures based on the European robin which is more round and orange. I realized the robin’s body is based around an explosive orange blob of color and decided to use this as the approach for constructing the image.
